Reviews and Critical Analyses of His Works
The works of Muhammad Munir Idilbi have sparked a wide range of critical responses—receiving both praise and criticism. On the positive side, many readers and intellectuals have commended the reformative nature of his writings, particularly his renowned series “The Unknown Islam”, which was praised for its courageous approach to sensitive topics and its well-documented, rational interpretations of controversial issues. The series became one of the best-selling works in the region and was well-received by scholars and researchers for its depth and bold engagement with complex religious questions. Naturally, his works have also attracted critical opinions.
One of the most notable examples reflecting the impact of Idilbi’s intellectual contributions is found in his book “Killing the Apostate: A Crime Prohibited by Islam”, where he dismantled the traditional jurisprudential ruling that calls for the execution of apostates. He refuted this position using evidence from the Holy Qur’an and The Noble Hadith, a stance that resonated strongly within contemporary Islamic legal discourse.
Remarkably, leading official religious institutions—such as Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta—later adopted the same view expressed in Idilbi’s book, affirming that an apostate should not be executed merely for changing their religion, and that their fate should be left to God unless their actions involve incitement or a threat to public security. This position was clearly presented in an article published on Youm7 on October 8, 2017.
Another notable example comes from an article written by a columnist discussing freedom of belief and thought, in which he referenced Idilbi’s research on apostasy and excommunication. He wrote:
“Therefore, the constant wielding of the weapon of takfir (excommunication), and the claim that apostates must be killed—despite the lack of any valid proof—makes, as the Syrian researcher Muhammad Munir Idilbi asserts, the wheel of execution for disbelief and apostasy spin endlessly, sparing no one.”
Muhammad Munir Idilbi’s works have sparked a remarkable intellectual movement, prompting many to revisit traditional concepts and stirring stagnant waters around sensitive religious topics. Thanks to this critical engagement, his books have gained broader recognition and contributed significantly to the ongoing discourse on intellectual reform in modern Islamic thought.
Famous Sayings and Quoted Passages
Muhammad Munir Idilbi became known for his powerful and eloquent rhetorical style, which made many of the phrases from his books widely quoted by readers for their clarity and boldness. Among his most well-known and frequently cited statements is:
“Truly I say to you—be aware and reflect: Through the belief in the legitimacy of killing the apostate, the corrupt have incited, unjustly killed, and assassinated those they deemed worthy of death, all without a second thought, without fear in their hearts, and without the slightest sting of conscience. Why? Because they believe they are carrying out God’s command against someone they have judged as a disbeliever, an apostate whose blood is lawful.”
He then continues, describing the supposed ruling of killing the apostate as:
“A corruption on Earth that angers God Almighty. And the one who is killed while committing such acts does not die a martyr but rather dies as a criminal—murdering both himself and innocent servants of God.”
In his effort to raise public awareness about the dangers of ignorance and blind submission to popular superstitions about spirits, jinn, and devils, he wrote:
“The blood of these victims and sacrifices—still to this day—continues to flow on the altars of superstition and deception: years of life, wealth, honor, and human dignity are trampled beneath the feet of charlatans, sorcerers, and those who remain silent about them… so beware where those feet tread!”
And in affirming that Islam calls its followers to be examples of peace in every aspect of their lives—in their faith, speech, actions, and even inner intentions—and that peace is the foundation of a Muslim’s relationship with all people, he wrote:
“Thus, we find in the Holy Qur’an—the sacred book of Muslims—that God, their Lord and the Lord of all the worlds, commands them to be peaceful in their faith, peaceful in their words, peaceful in their deeds and efforts, and peaceful in their intentions and aspirations. In the end, they are to be nothing but peace—within themselves, with others, and with the entire world—except with aggressors.”
His Legacy
Muhammad Munir Idilbi departed from our world in 2025, leaving behind a profound literary and intellectual legacy. His works continue to be widely read and serve as a source of inspiration for every sincere seeker of truth and for all those striving to understand religion with renewed awareness and deep insight—an understanding that looks beyond the surface of texts to their true purposes.
His writings remain a wellspring of intellectual, spiritual, and philosophical enrichment, circulated within cultural circles and discussed in academic and intellectual forums. His life stands as a powerful example of intellectual courage and an unwavering commitment to renewal and reform—one that never compromised on principles nor feared criticism. He embodied the spirit of a free-thinking scholar—unafraid to pose difficult questions and unhesitant to delve deeply into inherited traditions in order to understand and critique them. He firmly believed that religion must be alive, dynamic, and deeply connected to human reality at all times.
All credit for the inspiration and insight found in his writings and studies goes to the teachings and knowledge of the Promised Messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (peace be upon him). Without his divine guidance—which clarified the truths, illuminated the paths of knowledge, and marked the way forward for seekers—and without the religious and intellectual reform movement he launched, which restored clarity to true faith and light to the hearts through divine revelation, these works would never have come into existence.
Today, his sons oversee the official website and digital archive of his complete works. They remain committed to preserving and passing on his rich intellectual legacy and his unique approach to research and truth-seeking to future generations.
